Surgical Gloves Experience Workshops
February, in Leeds
March, in Nottingham
As part of its commitment to the education and support of healthcare professionals, Mölnlycke Health Care, manufacturers of the Biogel® surgical gloves range, has arranged a series of Surgical Gloves Experience Days, starting in January 2012.
The Surgical Gloves Experience Days, which are free to attend, provide delegates valuable information on surgical gloves, including the manufacturing process, the EN455 standard, how manufacturers perform to the required standard and how this impacts a healthcare professional's clinical practice. This will enable delegates to make an informed clinical or procurement based decision on selecting the right surgical glove for their needs. The interactive workshops are aimed at theatre staff, surgeons, clinical leads and procurement staff.
The day will also include a session on the financial impact of blood-borne viruses and needlestick injuries to staff and patients. Delegates will learn how these can be reduced with the introduction of the EU Sharps Directive which will require mandatory compliance for all healthcare facilities by 2013. Each delegate will receive a certificate of attendance, which will count towards their continuing professional development file.
Torbjörn Turland, Product Manager, Mölnlycke Health Care, says: "The experience days provide an excellent forum to share industry knowledge of the complexities of the manufacturing process for surgical gloves. This is really important in order to comply with the demands of the EN455 Standard and gives healthcare professionals the relevant information to be able to choose a surgical glove that is both safe and comfortable. The Surgical Gloves Experience Days are a great way to demonstrate this as well providing information and guidance to healthcare workers."
The first Surgical Gloves Experience Days are scheduled for Tuesday 24 January 2012, at The Royal College of Surgeons in London, and Wednesday 25 January at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Birmingham city centre. There are also further workshops planned for Leeds & Nottingham, in February and March. For more information, or to reserve a place on one of the workshops, please contact Torbjörn Turland on 01582 676 108 or email torbjorn.turland@molnlycke.com

Amputations
29 February - 1 March 2012
This course is aimed at the multi-professional surgical team who undertake amputations. There will be hands-on sessions and a multi-disciplinary faculty of vascular, plastic, orthopaedic, general surgeons, anaesthetists and rehabilitation experts who will cover the techniques of all the amputations from digital amputations to hind quarter.
Amputations are commonly performed procedures. There is a relatively high failure and revision rate for amputations. The functional results can also be improved by well performed amputations. Most amputations are performed in elderly patients with peripheral vascular disease, but occasionally these procedures are required in younger patients with non-salvageable limb injury or tumour. There are a variety of amputation techniques ranging from toe amputation to the rare hind quarter amputation. Traditionally these procedures have been taught on the job, but the changes in training and working hours make it desirable for the principles of these procedures to be taught outside operating theatres. This course aims to provide an in-depth understanding of the principles and techniques of all amputations with the opportunity to practice these on cadavers under the supervision of an experienced multi-disciplinary faculty.
Held at: The Royal College of Surgeons of England

March 2012
'Small Changes, Big Impact' – The 2012 IHI Open School (UK) Conference
CARDIFF: Friday 23 to Saturday 24 March 2012
You're invited to Cardiff this spring for 'Small Changes, Big Impact' - the annual IHI Open School (UK) Conference.
Healthcare students, practice educators and academics from across the UK will be in Europe's fastest growing capital for two unique days.
Make sure you join them as they explore the real difference that small improvement changes are making within healthcare. And discover the part you can play in this exciting movement for change – working together to improve patient care and safety.
A packed programme will include recognised experts in quality improvement, systems engineering, patient safety, human factors and team leadership. They'll be ready to share their knowledge and insights from an array of experiences and backgrounds to help you develop your own personal improvement skills.
Due to expected attendance patterns, Friday 23 March will focus on academic staff and pratice educators and Saturday 24 March on students - but both days will be relevant to everyone. You can join us for either day or both.
You'll also have an opportunity to submit an abstract for the conference – to share your improvement experience and learning with delegates.
Quality improvement – what's it all about?
In healthcare we need to develop a culture of ongoing improvement in order to provide the best possible care and reduce waste, harm and variation in the system. The experience of the health service is that excellent care can be provided, but it's not always provided reliably and consistently. Individuals in our care deserve the very best and as students and lecturers, you have the opportunity to drive changes to meet that expectation.
Book your place today!
Spaces are limited for this year's conference and are available on a first come, first serve basis. You can book to attend one or both days.
Use our online booking service to reserve your place. Should you need further details, please email Sue Lister or call (029) 2082 7653.
The conference is taking place at Cardiff Metropolitan University School of Management and information is available for transport links and accommodation.
